From towering pyramids to celestial alignments, ancient Mesoamerican cities have long fascinated archaeologists and conspiracy theorists alike. The ruins of Teotihuacán and Chichen Itza attract millions each year. Recent discoveries now suggest that these monumental structures may not just be remnants of the past but hidden portals to something deeper and way more mysterious, as per Indy100.

Beneath the surface of these ancient sites, experts have unraveled clues pointing to what might be a gateway to the underworld. No, that’s not an imaginary plot; it’s a real discovery. In Teotihuacán, deep under the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, archaeologists found a 338-foot-long tunnel leading to sealed chambers filled with an unexpected and hazardous substance: liquid mercury. The presence of mercury is shocking not only because of its rarity in ancient sites but also because its extraction from cinnabar ore would have required dangerous processing techniques. Another important point to note is that there is the presence of mica, a mineral with insulating properties found in abundance across Teotihuacán’s ruins, as per Indy100.

Huge sheets were unearthed near both the Feathered Serpent and the Pyramid of the Sun. The nearest source of mica? Almost 4,600 miles away in Brazil. Some researchers speculate that the combination of mercury and mica could imply ancient energy systems. Art historian Annabeth Headrick shared, "Mirrors were considered a way to look into the supernatural world; they were a way to divine what might happen in the future… A lot of ritual objects were made reflective with mica," as per The Guardian. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in Chichen Itza, archaeologists are probably beneath El Castillo, the famed temple of Kukulcan.

Using electrical resistivity tomography, the tunnel was detected leading toward a hidden cenote, an underwater cavern sacred to the Maya. Guillermo de Anda, leader of the Great Mayan Aquifer Project, remarked, “There’s a possibility they were already dead when they were deposited in the cenote, and maybe they honored them by putting them there, or maybe they were trying to send their spirit to send a message to the water gods… to get to the truth we still need to do a lot of research,” according to CNN.

De Anda noted, “For Mayans, cenotes were the entrance to the underworld… The Maya conceived of the cosmos as having three basic layers: heavens, earth and underworld… The underworld was very important—it was considered the origin of life, and if the Mayans didn’t keep a good balance between this layer of the universe and their own, it could mean drought, famine, or sickness. So they knew they had to keep the peace with their deities of the underworld, and this is why sometimes they made offerings.” The cenote may hold more than water. Human sacrifices, especially of children, were common in such sites. De Anda’s studies show that many of these children suffered from severe malnutrition and anemia, posing questions about their origins and whether they were chosen or taken for sacrifice.
