Toddler killed by blunt force trauma, two adults charged in case police described as 'unfathomable'

Two adults face charges after a 2-year-old child died with numerous injuries in a case described by the police chief as “unfathomable,” according to a report.

On Nov. 12, police in Opelika, Alabama, started to investigate the death of a 2-year-old girl. The child’s body was taken for an autopsy, according to Opelika police.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma, according to WBRL. The girl had numerous injuries, including a brain bleed, a fractured skull and a broken rib.

The child’s mother, Chasity Baker, and her boyfriend, Jamario Mitchell, were arrested this week in connection to the child’s death.

Baker and Mitchell told police the child was sick and they checked on her throughout the night, according to WBRL. They said they did know how the girl was hurt.

Police charged both with murder and they are being held in Lee County jail on $450,000 bond.

“It’s a horrific incident, a two-year-old is defenseless, and it’s just unfathomable that this could happen to a two-year-old,” Opelika Chief Shane Healey told WBRL.
