Rangers reportedly responded to a report of an armed individual "making threats" in the area of Canyon Village in the central part of the park overnight on July 3, authorities said.

One suspect was killed and one park ranger was injured in a shootout at Yellowstone National Park, officials said.

The National Park Service said in a statement on July 4 that rangers responded to a report of an armed individual "making threats" in the area of Canyon Village in the central part of the park overnight on July 3.

When law enforcement rangers made contact with the suspect, there was "an exchange of gunfire," park officials said.

The suspect, who was not publicly identified, was killed. One Yellowstone law enforcement park ranger was injured, and was said to be in stable condition at a regional hospital.

Park officials said there were no further active threats to the public.

An area around the Canyon Lodge complex remained closed on July 4 for the investigation, which was being led by the FBI with support from National Park Service special agents.
