Around 12:15 a.m. June 20, Redwood City police responded to a report of a man lying unconscious on the sidewalk in front of the wine bar, according to authorities.

Police said the unconscious man was drunk and wine bar employees asked the man to leave.

However, the man refused to leave, which is when security forcibly removed him from the bar and pinned him to the sidewalk until he calmed down, officials said.

It didn’t end there though, as the man tried to re-enter the wine bar and was involved in another altercation, as bar security removed him and forced him on the sidewalk again, police said and reported by the Palo Alto Daily Post.

According to authorities, this is when security guard Paula Iloahefaiu Alipate, 57, kicked the victim in his head and hit him in the face with a flashlight at least four times.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and Alpite was arrested two days later and charged with assault with force likely to cause bodily injury, officials said.

After this incident, the Daily Post reported the victim died of medical issues that were not connected to the assault at the wine bar.

While Redwood City police have not released the name of the victim or when he died yet, they have determined the beating he suffered from the bouncer did not cause his death, officials said.
