A Colorado man allegedly shot his longtime live-in girlfriend to death and then kidnapped her young grandson, according to authorities.

Around 8:15 p.m. on Feb. 24, the Denver Police Department said they responded to a report of a woman who had been shot at a home.

Clemente Flores-Hernandez, 43, allegedly killed his girlfriend and then abducted the child, claimed the murder victim's son, who is the boy's father, police said.

The victim's son told detectives he and his child were in the basement when his mother told them to come upstairs since dinner was ready. The man's boy went upstairs, but he stayed behind in the basement.

A short time later, the man said he heard gunshots and went upstairs. Flores-Hernandez approached the man "with a gun pointed at him,” police said.

The two struggled over the weapon before Florez-Hernandez allegedly pushed the man against a wall. The man told police he was “unable to breathe, was dizzy and felt he was going to lose consciousness."

Police said Flores-Hernandez then grabbed the man's child from the couch and fled the house.

The boy's father eventually was able to get up and he started following Flores-Hernandez and the child until police stopped the suspect.

Flores-Hernandez got out of his vehicle with the child in his arms and officers took him into custody, officials said.

While he was being detained, officers responded to the residence and found the suspect's girlfriend with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s son and grandson did not suffer any serious bodily injury during the incident, police said.

Flores-Hernandez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and first-degree kidnapping, KDVR-TV reported.
