A Georgia-based dentist had his license revoked and practice suspended after his patients accused him of poor orthodontic work. Dr. Justin Scott has allegedly performed questionable work on the teeth and gums of many.
Scott, who practiced at Atlanta-based Pure Dental Health, received a suspension order from the Georgia Board of Dentistry. However, he is fighting the decision to win back his reputation, license, and permission to practice.
Dentist accused of tawdry dental practice
Dr. Justin Scott endangered lives of patients with his poor dental work
The primary allegations against Dr. Justin Scott include cases involving implant placement, root resorption, and occlusal issues. Not just one, but the surgeon has allegedly mishandled treatments for many of his patients, who then suffered severe complications.
For instance, a patient alleged that Scott installed poorly placed implants at two different sites. As a result, the individual suffered bone necrosis, despite having taken out a $20,000 loan to acquire the dental services in the first place.
Another woman revealed she is at risk of losing her front teeth entirely due to significant root resorption. A third patient in the complaint further accused, “I have no teeth, I have no functional teeth. This side broke all the way off.”
One of Dr. Scott’s patients ended up seeking help from another dentist after Scott removed all the lower implants in her mouth.
A former patient, Patrick Archibald, said he could barely speak after the treatments he received from Dr. Justin Scott. In his words, “I want my mouth fixed. I want what I paid for. Because five years later, all this money in, and instead of my dream teeth I have no teeth."
Dentist fights back against license suspension
In the wake of his license being revoked based on severe patient complaints, Dr Justin Scott has chosen to fight back against the claims. His lawyer, Matthew S. Coles, has now alleged that the board’s suspension is ‘unlawful’.
In an emergency petition, Coles alleged that the investigative board had inspected the premises of Scott’s practice but had done nothing for almost six months. The decision to draw up a suspension thus stood null and void.
Matthew further argued, “The board does not allege any expert reviewed Dr Scott's care, and offers no expert opinion that any patient was endangered. Dr Scott's Buckhead practice is shuttered, 12 employees face unemployment, and hundreds of patients have lost access to ongoing care. His practice, listed for sale at $2.1 million, has received only a $300,000 offer since the suspension — a destruction of $1.8 million in value."
The on-site inspection of Dr. Scott’s dental facilities in Atlanta revealed major errors. Some were blatant, including poor sterilization techniques and storage. Equipment was found lying loosely in drawers, unsealed and prone to contamination.
Other issues included improper maintenance records and even expired crucial supplies still in use. Anesthetic cartridges, patient supplies, medications, and other tools were spotted in inferior quality and under questionable hygiene.
