A Texas man is accused of murder after a woman was found dead following a wellbeing check, authorities said.

Around 9:22 p.m. on Dec. 2, the Corpus Cristi Police Department said they dispatched officers to a home after concerned family members contacted them about a woman, later identified as Melissa Hernandez.

Police said they communicated with the homeowner, Hector Davila, 62, but he refused to allow officers to conduct the check.

“Due to the information provided to the officers and through their investigative efforts, officers believed that the victim was in danger,” police said.

Officers contained the scene and obtained a search warrant for the residence. Upon entering the home, police found 46-year-old Hernandez dead, and they placed Davila under arrest.

KRIS-TV reported Hernandez was stabbed multiple times and her body was underneath blankets.

An arrest affidavit obtained by the station states Hernandez was a health provider for the suspect and she had been living in his home for as long as two months.

The affidavit states Davila and the victim weren’t in a relationship, but he was “very possessive and obsessed” with her, “often acting like a jealous boyfriend.”

Family described Hernandez as being “scared” of the suspect.

Davilla was being held on a murder charge in the Nueces County Jail.
