A Las Vegas man has been arrested after three people were found dead inside an apartment unit by police who were responding to a different stabbing call, according to authorities.

Around 9 a.m. on June 27, officers responded to an apartment complex in Las Vegas regarding a report of a possible stabbing near the leasing office, according to KLAS-TV.

Once at the scene, officers found a 50-year-old Hispanic man, who was a maintenance worker at the complex, with stab wounds in the leasing office. He told police the man who stabbed him was in the courtyard behind the leasing office, KLAS-TV reported.

Then the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Spencer McDonald, ran through the leasing office and police were able to take him into custody.

During a press conference, Homicide Lt. Jason Johansson said McDonald had a large “mace or sledgehammer type weapon,” according to KLAS-TV.

Before the 911 call took place, police said the leasing office asked two maintenance workers to do a welfare check on an apartment. Officials did not give details on why the welfare check was needed, but the maintenance workers entered the apartment with their key.

They said the apartment looked “disheveled” and they were immediately attacked by McDonald. One of the workers was able to get away and ran to the leasing office, which is when workers called 911, authorities said.

That victim was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The officers that responded to the apartment complex went to check the apartment in question and located the bodies of three victims, one of them being the other maintenance worker, police said.

According to the Clark County Coroner’s office, the victims were Andrew Graden, 43, Christopher Brassard, 45, and Dina Raker Vail, 80.

Graden’s cause of death was blunt and sharp force injuries. Brassard’s cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries, according to KLAS-TV.

The cause of death for Vail was listed as sharp force injuries of the head, neck and chest, officials said. KLAS-TV reported that Vail is the grandmother of McDonald.

McDonald was arrested and charged with three counts of open murder and one charge of attempted murder, officials said.

He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 3.

No details were given on what led up to the homicides at this time.
