A Michigan man is accused of murdering his father, mother and brother and then fleeing, authorities said.

On Sept. 27, Daniel Sougstad, 23, pleaded not guilty after he was arraigned for the triple homicide of his parents, John and Barbara, and brother, Ryan, at their Windsor Township home.

According to authorities, on Sept. 24, emergency dispatchers sent Eaton County Sheriff’s Office deputies to the Sougstads’ residence on an unknown 911 call.

A short time later, a neighbor called 911 to report a girl had come to their door with a foot injury and they heard screams and gunshots coming from the home next door, WILX reported.

“This was not a random act,” The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said, WILX reported.

Sougstad was being held without bond at the Eaton County Jail on the open murder charges as well as three felony firearm violations. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Oct. 4.

John Sougstad, the murder suspect’s father, reportedly was the assistant director of special education and clinical supervisor of psychological services at the Jackson County Intermediate School District.

“John’s death is a huge loss to the Jackson County ISD,” district spokesperson Kaci Babineau said. “He was our assistant director of special education so he touched a lot of people’s lives in a lot of different spaces around the country and around mid-Michigan really.”
