Rhode Island police have charged a 76-year-old nursing home resident with murder following an investigation into the “sudden death” of his roommate, according to authorities.

Around 10 p.m. on April 27, officers with the Warren Police Department went to the nursing home to investigate the death of an 81-year-old patient, the Miami Herald reported.

Officials said a nurse went to the mens’ room to check on them when one of the residents, Robert Hill, blocked the door and wouldn’t let her into the room.

Once the nurse got inside the room, she saw Hill “standing over the victim,” the Miami Herald reported.

The victim, who was unresponsive and had pillow stuffing in his mouth, was identified as John Sullivan, officials said.

According to court documents, Hill told the nurse multiple times, “He tried to kill me first. He has been trying to kill me for five, ten years."

Hill was arrested and charged with one count of murder, officials said. He is being held without bail.
