Police responded to the death of a 53-year-old woman and thought it was natural causes. Then her boyfriend — 20 years her younger — confessed.

Now, the man who killed out of jealousy will spend decades behind bars.

In Texas, a judge sentenced Enrique Cuvillier to 70 years in prison for the 2015 killing of Evelyn Denise Rardeen, according to KCBD. The two were dating at the time and Cuvillier was 29 years old, Rardeen was 53.

On Dec. 29, 2015, police in Lubbock, Texas, responded to Rardeen’s home after a family member found her dead, according to KCBD.

There were no signs of foul play, police initially said, according to KLBK. Investigators believed she died of natural causes.

Around 4 a.m. the next day, officers responded to a pickup truck parked outside the sheriff’s office. Cuvillier was in the truck and told police that he killed Rardeen, KLBK reported. Officers waited until he was no longer under the influence before questioning him.

Cuvillier told police he was upset because Rardeen cheated on him with another man.

“I kept choking her more, because she kept coming back to life,” Cuvillier said and witnesses testified during the trial, according to KLBK.

Cuvillier then carried her to a bedroom where he finished the deadly attack, the station reported.

During sentencing, Cuvillier attorney noted that his client accepted responsibility for his actions. The attorney argued Cuvillier didn’t deserve a life sentence and he suffered paranoia while on meth, according to KCBD.

“That night he told the deputy to ‘just shoot me in the head.’ He has made efforts to make himself better. To be someone who doesn’t do those things he did that night,” the attorneys said, according to KCBD.

While the judge didn’t give him a life sentence, a 70-year-old sentence for the now 35-year-old killer might just be one.
