Deoxyribonucleic acid tests, or DNA tests have been used successfully to reunite long-lost family members, but, for a Colorado couple, the results hit a little too close to home. Celina Quinones (@celinaq) wanted to use genealogical testing to learn more about her background. The results indicated that some relationships have gotten mixed up in her life. Her beloved husband of almost two decades turned out to be her cousin. The disclosure shook her world and when she shared it with social media, her ultimate decision faced varied reactions.

Families Looked Very Similar

Celina Quinones, a realtor, married Joseph Quinones, just after a few months of dating in July 2006, PEOPLE reported. Their separate families looked very similar, but it did not raise any red flags for them. "We ended up having our wedding, and even then, our grandmas seemed to be a lot alike, and they got along, but still, nothing clicked," she recalled.

The couple had a happy marriage and welcomed three children in ten years. A decade into their marriage, Celina Quinones contacted MyHeritage to take a DNA test.

Surprising Revelation

The results came in and Celina Quinones was shaken, PEOPLE reported. Her husband was her cousin, as per the data in the website's family tree. A lot of the things she had noted in both of their families, started to make sense.

"I ordered the DNA tests," Celina Quinones shared. "They came in, and sure enough, we did our swabs, put them in the mail, and off they went. Then we got the results back, and I searched the family tree DNA — another part of the search — and saw him pop up there. And I go, 'Oh no.'"

After the revelation, there was a moment when the woman doubted her relationship. Ultimately, she decided to remain with her husband. "Joseph was like, 'Babe, don't worry about it. It's not a big deal. Just brush it off.' I was like, 'Should we get a divorce? Are we even supposed to be together?' I started rethinking ... and then after a while, I was like, 'Nope, we're just staying together.' There's nothing we can do about it. I'm not going to let some blood come between us," the realtor stated.

Viral Video

Celina Quinones (@celinaq) shared her experience on social media. The video began with a photo of her and Joseph Quinones, on their wedding day. The text overlay read, "Married my husband in 2006. Not thinking anything of it, we had three kids."

The next photo was of her family tree featuring her husband, as a paternal cousin. She stated in her caption, "My kids and my husband are my everything and we looked passed it. All our kids have 10 fingers and 10 toes. It’s a good ice breaker lol."
