13-YEAR-OLD GIRL STABS HER MOTHER TO DEATH IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT: "SHE'LL NEVER FORGIVE ME"
A 13-year-old girl from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania has confessed to killing her mother. WYOU reports that Lataya Powell will be charged as an adult for allegedly murdering her mother. She was visibly shaken up after the whole incident. While being taken away by the police Powell said that she felt “regret, guilt and self-disgust” at her actions. But some questions still remain unanswered about an 11-year-old boy who was also found on the premises. There is no clarity about his relationship with the mother-daughter duo. He was also injured but the wounds did not seem life-threatening and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
As per the press release from the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, the police responded to a call from the location at 12:30 p.m. local time. They were informed about "an unresponsive female” who was not breathing and quickly sent aid to the place as fast as possible. The coroner pronounced the mother dead, soon after reaching the site and sent her body for autopsy. After an "extensive investigation," the police concluded that the victim suffered wounds to the torso and “head area.” The second victim, an 11-year-old boy, was also found with stab wounds on his back.
The authorities did not find any murder weapon on the scene and also noted that all the drawers and cabinets were padlocked except for one which was broken. After she was questioned, the girl told the police that she did not have a phone with her since her mother had taken it away before an argument broke out between the two. Powell reportedly told officers that after stabbing her mother she threw the weapon at her neighbor's doorstep. In her statement, the daughter said she felt guilty about the whole incident and informed cops that she stabbed her mother in the heat of the moment, as she charged at her mother while the two of them were arguing.
Wilke-Barre Police arrested the teen and she was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and “other related charges.” Considering the severity of her crime, she was charged as an adult despite being a minor, and will soon be presented before court. As per the police complaint, during custody, the daughter has made statements like, “I killed my mom and she’ll never forgive me if she is alive. I’m the reason my mom is dead” and “I don’t know how people can do stuff like this and not feel bad about it."
