According to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, a high school student shot a teacher during morning classes. The shooting occurred in Hill County College Preparatory High School in Texas on March 30. The 15-year-old student then shot himself after firing at the teacher.
The shooting immediately placed the school on lockdown, prompting a large law enforcement response and a student reunification effort. Authorities did not indicate any connection to other unrelated incidents.
According to the sheriff’s office, the teacher who was shot was taken to the San Antonio hospital, but there was no update on her condition. The 15-year-old student was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Associated Press, an officer from the sheriff’s office said the 15-year-old student, who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other injuries were reported.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the situation did not constitute an active threat and that there was no danger to students or faculty following the shooting.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. Authorities have not released the names of the students or the teacher because the investigation is ongoing.
One student told KSAT-TV that they heard loud bangs coming from a room on the second floor, followed by screaming. Another student said they heard five shots and yelling before a teacher instructed students to get inside a classroom.
Deputies were dispatched to the Mustang Vista area near the school after reports of shots being fired. School officials initially said the campus was secured and that the threat had been contained. They later said students would be transported to Bulverde Middle School at 29975 Wiley Road for reunification with parents.
“We understand how scary this has been for families and our entire community. Thank you for your patience and for helping us share accurate information,” the sheriff’s office said.
“We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more,” the authorities assured.
Authorities asked people to avoid the area unless they are picking up a student so emergency crews can continue with their work. Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the case.
