A Haven For Illegal Migrants? Two Women Killed Hours Apart in Long Island, Man Admits to Murders

22 year old illegal immigrant kills two women in rage, motive not revealed
A 22-year-old undocumented immigrant, Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, is in custody after two women were killed in separate knife attacks on Long Island within hours of each other, according to police. The suspect later called officers and admitted to the killings, leading to his arrest on May 1, 2026.
Authorities said the man is originally from El Salvador and first attacked his roommate at an apartment in Valley Stream around 9 p.m. on April 30. The victim was identified as Eddy Raquel Castillo, 32, who was found with severe stab wounds to her neck and torso. Police said the two shared a rented home and used common spaces but were not known to be in a relationship.

Hours later, around 12:30 a.m., the suspect went to his workplace at a Wendy’s in Island Park. There, he attacked a coworker, Ana Maria de Aguila Cordova, 42. He attacked her while she was taking out the trash. She was also stabbed multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police were first called to the restaurant after a report of a man with a knife was shared with them. Officers found Cordova’s body outside the building. While investigating, they received information about another possible crime at the Valley Stream address, where the earlier victim was found.
The suspect was later stopped near a convenience store in Lynbrook after asking to speak with police. “He asked to see the police and when police arrived, he said he killed somebody that night,” said Detective Lt. George Darienzo.
A coworker at Wendy’s described the scene with grief. “I can’t stop crying,” she said, pointing to the spot where Cordova died. Friends and family remembered Cordova as a dedicated mother and worker. A fundraising page is also made which describes her as a “vibrant spirit” who was liked for her strong work ethic. She is survived by her children, including two young ones on Long Island.

Police said the suspect had no prior arrests and no known gang ties. He now faces charges of first-and second-degree murder. Investigators have not shared the motive. The case has also drawn attention from the local leaders. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said the deaths raise concerns about immigration policies. “This didn’t have to happen,” he said.
He questioned how an unaccompanied minor could enter the country and later gain legal status without close supervision. Gov. Kathy Hochul has also been previously critical of the state for it being a “haven for illegal migrants.”
