An Alabama Mother Took Her 5-Year-Old Son for a Haircut. Then, He and the Barber Were Both Shot.

A 5-year-old Alabama boy was fatally shot and a man critically injured after a gunman opened fire on a house the pair were standing outside of, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on Jan. 7, at the Birmingham home, where the boy’s mother had brought her son to get a haircut, AL.com reported.

Police said the man who was shot was the barber.

Bessemer Police Det. Justin Burmeister told AL.com, “We know someone not at the house shot towards the house."

The boy was rushed to Children’s of Alabama hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The man was transported to the University of Alabama-Birmingham hospital. His condition is not clear.

Officials said no one is in custody in connection with the shooting, but investigators are working multiple leads.

“It’s terrible,” Burmeister told AL.com. “Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly challenging time.”

The names of the victims have not been released.
