A man in Alabama is accused of killing his 3-year-old son and his 62-year-old mother, police said.

Police in Birmingham, Alabama, announced the arrest of Desmond Burt Sr., 31. He was charged with two counts of capital murder.

Authorities said Burt Sr. killed Desmond Burt Jr., 3, and Cynthia Burt, 62, on April 3.

Roadarius Mauldin with Birmingham police said officers responded to a home for a welfare check and were met by concerned family members. First responders forced their way inside the home.

There, they found the woman and child dead, Mauldin said. Their injuries were consistent with a homicide, but officials have not said how they were killed.

Burt Sr. was taken into custody at the scene and then charged days later.

Authorities have not said what led to the shooting.

Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe page for the victims›. The page noted the money will be used for funeral services.

“Desmond Burt Jr. was a pure, precious soul. He was full of innocence, joy and very loved by his family,” the page read. “This is an unimaginable situation that no person/family should ever have go through.”
