The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Alex Murdaugh’s conviction for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, and ordered a new trial. Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, were found dead with gunshot wounds at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, South Carolina, in 2021.

In 2023, Alex received two consecutive life sentences after being found guilty of their murders. However, Alex and Maggie’s elder son, Buster Murdaugh, has always maintained that his father is innocent.

Buster Murdaugh believes the trial against his father Alex was unfair.

In an interview with Fox Nation, Buster opened up about losing two family members and the eventual conviction of his father. Once again stating that Alex is innocent, Buster said, “I don’t think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother. I mean, that’s, I mean, we’ve been here for a while now, and that’s been my stance.”

One key piece of evidence that was submitted during the trial was a short video captured on Paul’s phone, which showed Alex was at the hunting lodge minutes before the shooting. According to his initial alibi, Alex claimed he was visiting his ailing mother at the time and only discovered Maggie and Paul’s bodies later that night.

After the evidence was admitted, Alex confessed that he had lied about his whereabouts. However, Buster still believed the trial was unfair. “I was there for six weeks studying it [the evidence], and I think it was a tilted table from the beginning,” he said.

“And I think, unfortunately, a lot of the jurors felt that way prior to when they had to deliberate. It was predetermined in their minds prior to when they ever heard any shred of evidence that was given in that room,” he continued.

Buster added that his father was convicted because the jurors were overwhelmed and believed the media coverage. Now, three years after the trial, the conviction has been overturned. The Supreme Court found that the county clerk, Becky Hill, had influenced the jury, denying Alex the right to a fair trial.

However, Alex remains in prison as he is also serving a 40-year sentence after being convicted of several financial crimes. These include money laundering, fraud, tax evasion, and forgery. Prosecutors alleged that Alex killed his wife and son to gain public sympathy before his financial offences were exposed.

At the time, Paul was also set to undergo trial for the death of his friend Mallory Beach. Paul was driving a motorboat that crashed, resulting in Mallory’s death in 2019. Investigators found that his blood alcohol content was .286, over three times the legal limit.

Apart from Mallory, investigators have also probed the Murdaugh family’s possible links to the deaths of their housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, and nursing student Stephen Smith.

Before his crimes came to light, Alex had a strong reputation in South Carolina because of his family legacy. Three generations of his family had served consecutively as circuit solicitor for nearly a century.
