Alleged buyers on the social media marketplace platform threatened seller with weapons and fled
A Dayton, Ohio, resident became the victim of an armed robbery after arranging to sell iPhones through Facebook Marketplace. The deal, which had been arranged between the seller and the buyers, took a violent turn when a group of armed men threatened the victim and stole the phones.
The incident, which has raised concerns about the safety of conducting sales through social media apps, remains under investigation. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office also deployed a SWAT team to an apartment in the neighborhood where the suspected buyers allegedly fled after the robbery.
Facebook Marketplace Deal Goes Wrong Over iPhones
According to the sheriff’s office incident report, the time and location for the iPhone sale had already been arranged between the two parties. However, at the last minute, the seller was directed to a different location near Embassy Place at Palisades Point.
There, the seller was confronted by two armed men who were alleged buyers. They allegedly pulled guns on the victim, prompting him to hand over the phones he had brought to sell. The suspects then fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the seller ran from the area, fearing further violence. A law enforcement officer later spotted him and stopped to assist. After learning about the incident, the officer began investigating.

As the on-scene investigation began to locate the robbery suspects, eyewitnesses told authorities they saw the two armed men run toward one of two apartments in a nearby building.
The officer then called for reinforcements, and a SWAT team from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched. The building where the suspects were believed to have fled was immediately surrounded. For public safety, authorities established a perimeter, and nearby residents were asked to evacuate or shelter in place.
Under the direction of investigators, the SWAT team searched both apartments for suspects and weapons. When none of the robbery suspects were found, the team expanded its search throughout the area. Detectives also worked to obtain search warrants.
The Sheriff’s Office has warned the public about the often fraudulent nature of online transactions. MCSO Chief Jeremy Roy reminded residents to be aware of designated safe zones during such exchanges.
He said, “We would always tell people: If you're going to set up any type of sale online on social media, meet at one of your safe zones. It doesn't have to be here in Harrison Township.”
Furthermore, he reminded the public to remain alert to major red flags during such transactions. In his words, “When you're selling something on Facebook Marketplace, and it doesn't feel right, and then they're changing the location as you're getting there, those should be red flags that something is amiss.”
