Authorities Rescue 9-Year-Old After Long-Term Confinement Case Surfaces

A 9-year-old boy was \rescued from his father's van after being confined inside since 2024 in eastern France.

The boy was rescued after authorities received complaints from a neighbor that they could hear "sounds of a child" coming from a vehicle in the village of Hagenbach, near the borders of Switzerland and Germany, according to The Guardian.

Upon arrival, authorities forced open the van and found the child lying under a blanket in unsanitary conditions, said prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

The boy was malnourished and unable to walk after spending an extended period inside the vehicle.

According to prosecutors cited by CNN, the 9-year-old later told investigators he had not showered since 2024 and had experienced "significant difficulties" with his father's partner. He also said he believed his father had "no choice" but to confine him.

The boy was immediately sent to the pediatric unit at a hospital in Mulhouse, Le Parisien reported.

Upon questioning, the boy's father told investigators he placed the child in the van in November 2024 to "protect him" from his partner, who wanted to send him to a psychiatric hospital. The boy was 7 years old at the time.

However, prosecutors said the child had been doing well in school before his disappearance and had no medical records indicating psychiatric problems.

Additionally, the boy also told investigators that he was able to return to the apartment last summer while the family was away. During this period, his father gave him a phone to communicate with him and instruct him when he could leave the van or when he had to vacate the apartment.

The boy's father was formally charged with "abduction, confinement or arbitrary detention of a minor under 15" and "deprivation of care or food endangering the health of a minor under 15," according to prosecutors

Meanwhile, his partner, identified as the boy's stepmother, denied knowing the child was kept in the van and is being prosecuted for "failure to assist a minor under 15 in danger" and "failure to report mistreatment of a minor under 15." She was released on conditional bail, according to prosecutors.

Neighbors expressed shock, with one resident, Danielle, describing the situation as "truly devastating."

"We don’t understand it. It’s horrific, there are no words. I never once noticed anything, never heard anything … It feels like we’re living in a movie or a dream, and we keep thinking, ‘Tomorrow I’ll wake up, and maybe it’s not real.’ We just can’t comprehend it," she said, per Sky News.

Additionally, the couple's two other children, ages 12 and 10, have been taken into the care of social services.
