Biggest Tax Fraud Scandals In Hollywood — From Wesley Snipes’ Conviction To Nichols Cage Selling Off His House To Repay

Hollywood stars who committed tax fraud
Hollywood has witnessed several major tax evasions over the decades. Some of the scandals have involved the names of big stars like Nicolas Cage and Stephen Baldwin. Perhaps one of the biggest Hollywood financial crime cases was linked to Wesley Snipes.
Wesley Snipes Was Sentenced To Prison For Tax Evasion
Many were furious about Snipes getting 3-year prison sentence for tax fraud
Snipes, who starred in a number of box-office hits including Blade and Demolition Man, was convicted in 2008. He was found guilty on three misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file federal income tax returns.
Investigators accused him of not filing returns for several years despite making bank from his movies and other endorsements. Prosecutors also said that he followed discredited tax protest theories from his advisors, which claimed that Americans were not legally obligated to pay federal income taxes.
His prosecution remains one of the IRS’s most visible enforcement actions against a celebrity. Snipes was initially acquitted of the more serious felony fraud and conspiracy charges. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
His conviction was later upheld in the appeals court. However, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review his case. He was released in 2013 after serving around 28 months in prison.
Nicolas Cage, Stephen Baldwin, And Willie Nelson All Had To Repay What They Owed For Years
Cage had to sell off his luxury home and yachts to pay IRS
Another popular tax fraud scandal was linked to Nicolas Cage, the star of Ghost Rider, Wild at Heart, and Face/Off. Although he was never criminally charged, reports confirmed that he accumulated millions of dollars in unpaid taxes. The IRS reportedly filed liens for over $14 million against him. Cage had to sell off his luxury homes, cars, yachts, and other collectibles to make the payments. He blamed poor financial advice from former business managers.
Another popular star, Stephen Baldwin, also got embroiled in tax fraud scandals. He was charged by New York authorities in 2012 for failing to file state income tax returns for several years.
Prosecutors accused Baldwin of owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes, interest, and penalties. Although he was not sentenced to prison, the Hollywood star had to agree to repayment arrangements to avoid further criminal penalties, according to Reuters.
Willie Nelson was also accused of tax fraud. The country music legend’s assets were seized by the IRS in 1990 after he allegedly owed the agency $16.7 million in unpaid taxes. He later reached a settlement agreement with the IRS. However, to repay his debt, the singer had to resort to releasing an album titled “The IRS Tapes: Who’ll Buy My Memories?”
