Momeni was convicted in 2023 for fatally stabbing Cash App founder Bob Lee.

The stabbing incident of Bob Lee took place in the early morning hours of April 4, 2023, under the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. After being stabbed, Lee called 911 to report the incident. He later died from his injuries.

Police arrested Momeni in connection with Lee’s death and charged him with murder.

The investigation revealed that Lee was in a casual relationship with Momeni’s sister, who was married at the time, according to reports by the Los Angeles Times. During the trial in 2024, Momeni said he acted in self-defense, further stating that it was Lee who attacked him first. Momeni said Lee’s actions were provoked by a bad joke he had made.

“I just wanted to control the hands,” he said on the stand, according to the reports of ABC 7. “I was afraid for my life, I didn’t know what he was going to do,” Momeni said.

Although Momeni was convicted of second-degree murder in the tech executive’s killing, his appeal attempt has delayed sentencing. It has been more than one year, and sentencing has yet to be issued.

Murder

Momeni testified he was born in Iran and had fled to the United States as a child with his mother and sister to escape his abusive father. The family eventually settled in San Francisco, where he became interested in computers and taught himself to code.

Momeni initially worked as a systems engineer and IT administrator and started his own IT consulting business in 2010. Though neighbors described him as “very upbeat and positive” and a “nice guy” to Rolling Stone, he had at least one prior run-in with the law over alleged violence.

Momeni was arrested for domestic battery in 2022, after a woman reported that he had grabbed her arms and pushed her, according to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle. However, he has never formally been charged.

How did Momeni and Bob know each other?

Momeni met Lee through his sister, Lee’s former partner, Krista Drake, who told Rolling Stone in October 2023 that the two were new acquaintances at the time of the killing. However, The Wall Street Journal later reported that Momeni’s sister and Lee were in a casual relationship. Lee was also in a relationship with one of Momeni’s former girlfriends, according to people familiar with the relationship.

Incident Details

On April 3, 2023, Lee and Khazar, Momeni’s sister, attended a party at Lee’s friend Jeremy Boivin’s condo. Khazar later testified that Boivin s------- assaulted her, an allegation that Momeni confronted Lee about that night.

According to documents obtained by People, Momeni questioned Lee about whether his sister was using drugs or engaging in inappropriate behavior; however, Lee reassured Momeni that nothing inappropriate had happened.

Shortly after the argument, he drove Lee to a secluded area near the Bay Bridge and stabbed him three times in the chest and hip with a kitchen knife. Lee called 911 and was found in the early morning hours of April 4, but died after undergoing emergency surgery.

Momeni was convicted of second-degree murder in Lee’s killing in December 2024, but has not yet been sentenced.
