A 23-year-old driver faces upgraded charges after an 8-year-old cyclist was killed in a Charlotte crash.

A 23-year-old man was initially charged with a misdemeanor and released on bond after he crashed into an 8-year-old child riding her bike. The man had several traffic violations, and his release sparked public outcry that forced authorities to upgrade his charges.

Burney was initially given a $1000 bond, which has now been increased to $20,000.

The 23-year-old, Khaliyal Eijah Burney, had his charges upgraded following a public outcry and further investigation by authorities. His charges were upgraded on April 1, day after his arrest on March 31.

Burney was initially charged with driving with a revoked license, no liability insurance, failure to register a vehicle, and displaying a fictitious registration tag. He was initially given a $1000 bond, which was later increased to $20,000. On April 1, the charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle were added.

The family of the victim pushed for hit-and-run charges following a video of the incident. The video showed possible speeding, as the car was traveling 35 mph in a 25 mph zone. The victim’s father also asked for compensation, and the community remains shocked by the incident.

Neighbors told authorities that the car was on the wrong side of the road. They also said the driver did not immediately stop and alleged he was speeding. Reports indicated that the driver had a history of several driving violations.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Investigation Details

Authorities found Burney had more than 100 traffic violations and had previously been charged with driving with a revoked license. Investigators said Burney had been arrested five times previously. Investigators also said Burney’s father had been arrested eight times for separate charges.

What Happened with Naomi?

Naomi Summers, 8, was killed on March 28, during a crash at Monmouth Drive, Charlotte. She was riding her bike when the incident occured.

Authorities said that as Naomi rode into the street from her yard, she was struck by Burney. The 8-year-old was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. However, Burney was initially charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and released on bond.

The incident sparked widespread public outcry, prompting authorities to upgrade Burney’s charges.
