Bad weather was not the cause of the fatal sinking of the Bayesian superyacht two years ago, investigators said.

The superyacht owned by British tech billionaire Mike Lynch sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19, 2024, claiming the lives of Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and five others.

Investigators Blame Crew in Yacht Disaster

At the time, the U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch stated thatt “observations indicated the probable transient presence of hurricane force winds well in excess of 64kts [or 73 mph] at the time of the accident,” claiming “These winds were sufficient to knock Bayesian beyond its angle of vanishing stability.”

The report also noted that, these “vulnerabilities were also unknown to either the owner or the crew of Bayesian."

"There is the possibility that new evidence may become available that might alter the circumstances as depicted in this report,” they added.

However, experts appointed by Italian prosecutors to determine whether conditions in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the day of the incident said the storm was ‘little more than a squall’ and should have been manageable for the crew, Sky News reported.

Therefore, the outlet reported that the yacht, carrying 12 guests and 10 crew members, sank due to the crew's "improper actions, their underestimation of the weather, and certain safety devices not being activated properly."

The outlet also reported that Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident and are considering what crimes, such as "Negligent shipwreck, and multiple counts of manslaughter" may have been committed by the captain of the yacht and two of the crew members.

The 183-foot-long yacht was lifted from the water off the coast of Porticello last June after extensive efforts and a multi-million-pound operation.

“This was a complex and precise lifting operation to recover Bayesian, and followed a step-by-step programme of salvage work,” said Marcus Cave, Head of Naval Architecture and a Director of TMC Marine at the time.

He continued, "The salvage team has progressed in a systematic way that prioritized the safety of all working on site and minimized any potential impact on the environment. This care for personnel and for the environment will continue as Bayesian is transported into port tomorrow.”

Investigators Say Weather Didn’t Sink the Billionaire’s Yacht

Following the incident, 15 people were rescued, and seven others, identified as Lynch and his daughter Hannah, Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer, New York City-based lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife, jewellery designer Neda Morvillo, and chef Recaldo Thomas, died in the sinking, People reported.

"It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed," Jeremy Bloomer, Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother, told the BBC.

While Gareth Williams, the deceased chef's friend, stated, "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."
