A fight on New Year’s Day left one man dead in Connecticut and a second person has been charged with murder, police say.

Around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, police say a fight occurred and officers responded to a complaint of a physical disturbance in Waterbury, Connecticut.

At the scene, officials said a man identified himself as John T. Morgan, 56, and he was detained outside of his residence.

Inside the residence, police said they found a man, who was later identified as Franky Lanier Hogg Jr, 46, WFSB reported.

When found, Hogg was unconscious and not breathing while lying on the kitchen floor with several significant lacerations to his head, authorities said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

After an investigation, police said they determined that a fight happened between Hogg and Morgan, during which Morgan fatally wounded Hogg. Investigators did not say what led to the fight.

Morgan was arrested and charged with murder, police said. He is being held on a $1 million bond pending his arraignment.
