Richard Smith died days after an alleged deliberate collision in Norwich, police said.

A cyclist in his 50s was deliberately hit by a sports car in Norwich, England, authorities said. On May 8, at approximately 5 p.m., Richard Smith was cycling on Chartwell Road when he was involved in a serious collision. He was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries on May 11.

“The incident was reported to police as a cyclist being deliberately hit by a white Mercedes CLA 180 Sport car on Friday (8 May 2026) just after 5pm on Chartwell Road,” a statement from the Norfolk Police said.

The cyclist reportedly suffered serious head injuries and was in critical condition at the hospital.

Norwich Man Remanded in Custody

David Morgan, 40, of George Winter Court, appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on May 11, charged with attempted murder and driving with excess alcohol. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Norwich Crown Court on June 8.

Police said they will consult with the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) regarding the charge following Smith’s death.

Authorities have urged anyone with dashcam footage or information about the manner of driving of the white Mercedes before the collision to contact the Major Investigation Team online or call 101, quoting incident number NC-08052026-392.

Colleagues and Loved Ones Pay Tribute to Richard Smith

The family of Richard Smith paid tribute to the man they remember with “love and kindness.”

“A much-loved partner, dad, brother, son, friend, and colleague has sadly died after an incident on Friday, May 8, 2026. We are all struggling to make sense of such a tragic loss to all of our lives,” they shared.

“Rich was a keen NCFC supporter, a blood and organ donor, and a proud dad to his three children. We will remember him with love and kindness and for some truly terrible dance moves.”

Richard Smith worked as a sales manager at Delta Fire Ltd.

Delta Fire Ltd, where Smith worked as a sales manager, announced news of his death on social media.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much-loved colleague, Richard Smith, passed away yesterday following a road traffic incident,” the company wrote on LinkedIn.

“Richard was a valued member of our team and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him,” they continued.

“Our thoughts are with Richard’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We are supporting our staff as they come to terms with this loss. Thank you for your continued support and kindness.”

Many of his colleagues shared heartfelt messages and memories in the comments section after the announcement.

“I had the privilege of working with Richard the last couple of years, always welcomed me to visit, even if just for a chat and catch up, such sad news,” wrote Adam Lindley.

“Our team is so sorry to read this. Our thoughts are with Richard’s family, friends, and all of his work family at Delta Fire,” wrote Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service in the comments.
