DC Man Sentenced After Returning to Shoot Wounded Victim 7 More Times, Prosecutors Say

U.S. Attorney sentences Khalid Claggett for killing Isaac Aull in 2021 shooting case
A Washington, D.C. man who prosecutors said returned to shoot a wounded victim seven more times after an initial attack was sentenced on May 15 to 10 1/2 years in prison in connection with a 2021 killing, according to federal prosecutors.
Khalid Claggett, 42, was convicted earlier this year of voluntary manslaughter while armed and multiple firearms offenses in the death of Isaac Aull Jr., 30. Neal Kravitz handed down the sentence during a hearing on May 14 in D.C. Superior Court.
Prosecutors sought a 21-year prison sentence, arguing that the killing involved particular cruelty. Under District of Columbia sentencing guidelines, Khalid Claggett faced between 10 1/2 years and roughly 33 years in prison.
According to trial evidence, the shooting occurred on June 11, 2021, shortly after a court hearing connected to another homicide case involving the victim’s brother.
Authorities said Isaac Aull Jr. had watched a virtual preliminary hearing for John Young, who was charged in the killing of Dewayne Shorter III, Aull’s brother. After the hearing, Aull and another man allegedly went to a Walgreens parking lot on Rhode Island Avenue and fired at a vehicle belonging to John Young’s brother, Richard Young.
Authorities said Claggett, a close friend of John Young, was sitting in the passenger seat when the gunfire erupted.
Victim Was Left Lying helpless in Street

Investigators said Khalid Claggett chased Isaac Aull Jr. and another man to the 1600 block of Franklin Street after the parking lot shooting.
According to authorities, Claggett fired six shots at Aull at that location. One bullet struck the back of Aull’s head, leaving him wounded, unarmed and unable to move in the street. Claggett then fled the area, prosecutors said.
However, prosecutors said surveillance and dash camera footage later showed Claggett returning to the scene after allegedly changing his appearance. Investigators said he put on a mask, removed his sweatshirt and retrieved another gun before driving back to Franklin Street.

An Ambulance had already arrived and was parked near Aull when Claggett returned.
Reportedly, Claggett tried to fire at Aull again, but the gun jammed. After fixing the weapon, he went back to where Aull was lying and fired seven more shots into his body.
Defendant Already Faced Charges
Earlier in February Claggett was found guilty of first-degree murder of Aull
Claggett was arrested on June 25, 2021, and has remained in custody since then.
Prosecutors said he was already on release in two separate criminal cases at the time of the killing. Evidence presented during the sentencing also showed Claggett possessed several firearms, despite court orders barring him from having guns.
A jury convicted him in February 2026 of voluntary manslaughter, while armed, possession of a firearm, during a crime of violence, unlawful possession of a fire and offences committed while on release.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentence alongside Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Jeffrey Carroll.
