Once at the scene, police found the victim, later identified as 34-year-old Veronica Smart, lying face down on the street.

Smart had a gunshot wound to the head and was unresponsive. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene, according to authorities.

Investigators believe that while driving in the area, Smart’s boyfriend, 31-year-old Eugene Demarcus McKeithan, fired a handgun, fatally wounding Smart.

McKeithan then allegedly pulled the victim from the vehicle and fled the scene, officials said.
