The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has identified the possible motive behind the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. According to the department, the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran might have played a role in the suspect, Cole Thomas Allen's, motive.

DHS said that Allen allegedly plotted the attack due to “multiple social and political grievances.” According to an intelligence note sent to state and local law enforcement from the agency, the Iran war “may have contributed to his decision to conduct the attack.”

Cole Thomas Allen had grievances about the Trump administration

The incident happened during the White House dinner on April 25, when Allen allegedly attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump and other members of his administration.

An assessment by DHS’ Office of Intelligence pointed to social media posts made by the suspect prior to the attack that showed that he held some major grievances and strongly criticized Trump’s war against Iran.

Although the assessment dated April 27 is preliminary, it still offered a possible motive behind Allen’s action that sounds definitive. The report, described as a “Critical Incident Note,” was obtained by Reuters.

DHS has declined to comment on the intelligence assessment note. A spokesperson from the agency said, “These reports notify our partners of the latest available information following significant incidents that have impacts on homeland security.”

In the assessment, DHS has pointed to an email that was sent by Allen to one of his relatives on the night of the White House attack. The email, which has been described as the suspect’s "manifesto," heavily criticized the Trump administration. In the message, he also expressed his desire to attack the “traitor,” without mentioning the POTUS’ name.

Cole Thomas Allen made anti-Trump posts in weeks leading up to White House attack

Prosecutors allege that Allen strongly “disagreed” with Trump’s political ideology. He also ‘wanted to fight back against government policies and decisions that he found morally objectionable.”

A senior law enforcement officer told Reuters that Allen’s social media pages and his digital footprint are “being closely looked at.” The assessment included a Bluesky account linked to the suspect, which had a series of anti-Trump posts and messages in the weeks before the shooting.

The posts not only criticized Trump’s war on Iran but also his immigration policies, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the POTUS’s once "best buddy" Elon Musk. One of the posts also called for Trump’s impeachment after he threatened to erase Iranian civilization in early April.

The FBI also reviewed one of the posts made by Allen in 2024, where he seemingly described the Republican president as “the devil," quoting a verse from the Bible. DHS and other agencies are closely focusing on a review of the shooter’s social media activity to stave off any conspiracy theories.
