A 66-year-old man died after being found with his leg cut off in a park and now police say a 36-year-old man was charged with murder in the horrific death.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, a member of the public found a severely injured man in Fitzgerald Park in Innisfail, the Far North Queensland Police in Australia said.
Emergency services were called, but the man died shortly afterward, officials said.
According to authorities, two men drove together around 3:45 a.m. to Fitzgerald Park. They got out of the vehicle and sat under a tree in the park.
About 20 minutes after arriving at the park, officials said one of the men used a circular saw to cut the other man’s leg off below the knee.
After cutting off the man’s leg, he proceeded to help the man back to the car before he ran away, police said.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was found later in the day at an Innisfail address and was taken into custody, officials said. He was charged with one count of murder.
Authorities believe the incident was not a random attack, but they are not sure of the two men’s connection to each other.
The case remains open and under investigation, police said.
