An Alabama bank became the target of an unusual robbery on April 10. The incident stood out for several reasons because the suspect was an elderly woman, no weapon was used, and she later surrendered the stolen money to police.
The robbery occurred at Regions Bank in Gardendale, near Birmingham. Around 9 a.m., an elderly woman entered the bank premises. She handed a note to bank tellers and demanded money. The bank employees complied.
The Woman Surrendered the Money to the Police
The elderly woman surrendered the money to the police.
The woman then collected the cash and left the bank. However, instead of fleeing, she contacted the Gardendale Police Department and turned over all the money to officers. The woman is reportedly in custody, but authorities have not yet disclosed any charges.
Police are currently investigating the case, and the motive behind the woman’s actions remains unclear. Investigators have also sought assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Birmingham office in the probe. Police have announced the public need not worry as there is no ongoing threat.

Notably, the bank was closed on the day of the robbery. A spokesperson for Regions Bank stated that no one was harmed or injured during the incident. The bank’s corporate security team is coordinating with law enforcement in the investigation.
The woman's identity and age have not been publicly revealed. However, the Gardendale Police Department reported that it had notified the woman’s caregiver about the incident. The fact that she relies on a caregiver has led many to speculate about her cognitive abilities.
Social Media Speculates About the Woman’s Motive
One Facebook user wrote, “This seems like an extreme case of she rather be locked up than under the care of the caregiver. Hope there is a thorough investigation... possible Alzheimer's/ Dementia.”
Another commented, “She’s clearly struggling with her mind. If anything the caregiver needs to be held accountable, if she was supposed to be watching her. That may not be the case.”
Others offered different theories about the elderly woman’s motive. One individual wrote, “She may have been scammed into doing so; the elderly are easy targets. I hope she gave the police more information upon surrendering the money!”
One user opined that the woman might be indirectly asking for help. They wrote, “Sounds to me like she’s escaping her caregiver or someone is hurting her a little suspicious to me that she gives a note demanding money and then turns herself in right after she’s asking for help!”
Another remarked, “So one may had threatened her to do that then she got scared turned her self in and then who else was gone when she came back out but at least she did the right thing, and I pray for the lady."
Despite widespread speculation on social media, only the official investigation would determine what truly motivated the woman.
