Elon Musk Reacts as Convicted Sex Offender Disappears After Bail Release

The victim’s mother says the justice system failed her daughter.
Convicted s-x offender Carl Cacconie disappeared after he was granted bail by an El Dorado County judge, prompting the victim’s mother to file a formal complaint against the judge. The decision has sparked widespread criticism, including from Elon Musk.
A jury convicted Cacconie on six felony counts of committing lewd acts on an 11-year-old child. On the same day, Judge Michael McLaughlin allowed the 51-year-old to leave the courthouse on $1 million bail despite facing up to 18 years in prison.
Cacconie was found guilty on July 17, 2025. He was reportedly released with an ankle monitor and ordered to return on August 25, 2025, for sentencing, but the device disconnected on August 17 and the suspect has since remained on the run, according to KCRA.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing fury over the decision.
Even after his ankle monitor disconnected, authorities accepted the suspect’s explanation that he was charging the device when questioned, rather than taking steps to ensure he was not attempting to flee.
A Convicted Child Predator Remains at Large: Victim’s Mother
Cacconie has a bench warrant out for his arrest. Now, the victim’s mother, Alana Ramirez, has filed a complaint with the California Commission on Judicial Performance, the agency responsible for investigating complaints of judicial misconduct and judicial incapacity.
“The justice system failed my daughter and has done nothing to protect other potential victims. A convicted child predator remains at large,” Ramirez said in the complaint. “Our family continues to live with fear and uncertainty knowing that accountability was never completed and that he has successfully evaded justice for nearly a year."
However, the commission’s website states that an error in a judge’s decision or ruling is not, by itself, considered misconduct. Complaints describing legal errors without evidence of judicial misconduct are generally not investigated. Still, the complaint will be reviewed, but it is unclear how long that will take.
Incident Sparks Outrage on Social Media
El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said his office pushed Judge McLaughlin to take Cacconie into custody immediately after the guilty verdicts, but said the judge instead allowed him to remain free pending sentencing.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing fury over the decision. “Every time a judge chooses empathy for the perpetrator over the public, someone else pays for it,” wrote Matt Van Swol on X.
“Usually someone who hasn't been hurt yet. These judges have infinite empathy for criminals and zero for their victims or future victims.”
The post also drew attention from Elon Musk, who called the judge’s decision “crazy.”
Carl Cacconie was convicted of six counts of child s-x crimes.
“This is insane. Convicted on child s-x crimes and the judge just lets him walk? California’s justice system is completely broken,” another user named Cindy wrote. “The gov needs to either do something about these criminally complicit judges or begin a bounty program for citizens to round these monsters up,” MJ William added.
The California Department of Justice described Carl Wheaton Davies Cacconie as standing 6 feet tall and weighing about 240 pounds.
Authorities said he has brown eyes and black hair. He was reported missing by family members on August 22, 2025.
