A 14-year-old Florida girl was walking home from school when she was propositioned for sex by a convicted sexual predator, police said.
On Jan. 27, officers said a 14-year-old girl was walking home from school when she was approached by a man, who offered her $50 to have sex, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, deputies responded to a home in Deltona, Florida, after a resident saw the Facebook post from the sheriff’s office and found his security camera that captured video of the suspect.
After collecting the video footage, police started canvassing the area to try and find more video. One of the deputies saw a man approaching them on the sidewalk riding a bicycle. Police stopped the man and talked with him, got his identification and showed him the surveillance image, police said.
The man, identified as 49-year-old Shawn Winemiller, was wearing clothes that matched the victim’s description from the incident.
Police said they contacted the 14-year-old victim and she positively identified Winemiller as the person who approached her on Jan. 27, but Winemiller denied the allegation.
Officers checked Winemiller's criminal history and determined he is a registered sex offender convicted of sexual battery and unlawful sexual activity with certain minors for a 1992 incident.
Winemiller was arrested and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he is being held without bail, officials said.
He has been charged with aggravated stalking of a minor and lewd or lascivious battery by encouraging a minor to engage in prostitution or sexual activity. Also, his ID card did not display his sex offender status as required by law, so he faces an additional felony charge.
