U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell has dropped out of the California governor’s race after facing mounting pressure over s**ual misconduct, alleged by four women. His exit came just weeks before voters were ready to get their mail ballots for the June 2 primary election.
In a post on X, Swalwell announced the news. He wrote, "I am suspending my campaign for Governor. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made - but that's my fight, not a campaign's." He also apologised to his family and supporters, saying he was “deeply sorry for mistakes in judgement.”

The accusations came to light this week and were first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. A former staff member told the paper that Swalwell made inappropriate comments soon after she began working in his district office. She said he also sent her inappropriate messages and asked her for s--.
According to the BBC, the woman went on to describe a 2019 event in which she woke up naked in a hotel room with little memory of the night. Years later, she alleged another encounter where she pushed him away and said, “no.” She claimed she later noticed signs of abuse and trauma. Her claims were supported by text messages and statements from her former boyfriend.
Soon after the unnamed woman described the alleged incidents, three other women stepped forward and shared their experiences while working for Swalwell. The allegations range from abuse to rape to harassment.

Despite statements from four women, Swalwell has denied all the claims. He said, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public, as a prosecutor and a congressman, and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary, bring legal action."
However, the aftermath of the revelations brought immediate fallout for the congressman. Democratic figures, including Sen. Adam Schiff and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, withdrew their support within hours of the reports surfacing.
Swalwell was seen as a leading candidate in the race to replace outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom. His departure reshapes a crowded field with at least 10 candidates.
California’s primary system sends the top two vote-getters to the general election in November, regardless of party. With Democrats divided, early polls could bring some success to the Republicans, though they have struggled immensely in state-wide races.
As for Eric Swalwell, he has said that he will now focus on his family and his legal defence.
