Georgia Mother Convicted for Beating and Abusing Her Child, Gets Sentenced for 40 Years

Woman convicted and sentenced for 40 years for child abuse.
A Georgia mother has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for repeatedly torturing her own child. As per reports, she used to whip the child’s forehead frequently, choke the child, and beat their legs. Based in Cherokee County, the investigation began in 2023 when a teacher reported the situation.
Candice Nicole McClure, 35, was convicted on Thursday of one count of aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty in the first degree. Superior Court Judge Shannon Wallace presided over the trial and handed down the sentence, which is the maximum in Georgia. The verdict came after a four-day trial and almost three hours of jury deliberation.
Candice Nicole McClure was found guilty of abusing her child
According to Atlanta News First, prosecutors reported deep trauma and lasting harm to the child. “The trauma this child experienced is heartbreaking,” Cherokee County District Attorney Susan Treadaway said in a statement. “Instead of protecting her own child, the defendant repeatedly inflicted abuse that caused lasting harm.”
The case came to light in April 2023, when an elementary school teacher reported concerns about a student. The child confided in the teacher that McClure kicked and punched their legs and choked them with her hands.

The record then led to an investigation by the Division of Family & Children Services and the Canton Police Department. Later, during an uninformed visit to the home, a DFSC worker found visible injuries. Officials documented bruising on the child’s leg and a patterned mark on the forehead. He was then taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for a medical exam. Doctors found bruising on the legs and an injury on the forehead. They said the mark was consistent with being struck by a belt.
The child also took part in a forensic interview. There, additional details of abuse were shared.
During the trial, jurors heard from 12 witnesses. These included the child, family members, police officers, medical staff, and child advocacy staff. The school staff and DFCS also testified. Prosecutors presented 20 pieces of evidence, including photos of the injuries and school reports.

It is unknown when the ab**e started. But Assistant District Attorney David Bailey said it may have begun before the family moved to Cherokee County. “The family was new to Cherokee County, and we believe the abuse had been ongoing before the family arrived,” he said. “The schoolteachers are the heroes in this case. They recognized the signs of abuse and created a safe place for the child to come forward.”
As the case ended, the child thanked the jury for listening and said no one deserves to be treated that way.
