Gilgo Beach Murders: Police Announce Suspect Arrested in Infamous Long Island Serial Killer Case

Authorities in New York have announced they have taken into custody a suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders.
For over a decade, the Suffolk County police have been hunting for whoever is responsible for the murders of women found dead along the Atlantic Ocean in Long Island.
On July 14, a spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed there has been a “significant development in the case,” News 12 Long Island reported.

The outlet identified the alleged killer as Rex Heuermann of Massapequa Park, a town in Nassau County.
The New York Post reported Heuermann is an architect who works at a firm in Manhattan.
Investigators began to find the victims along a desolate highway in Suffolk County after a search for New Jersey sex worker Shannan Gilbert, 24. She went missing in 2010 after calling 911 when escaping the Oak Beach home of a client.
While looking for Gilbert, detectives located more victims and eventually found a total of of 11 human remains, including those of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, 24, a female toddler and a male. Two more sets of remains were found in Nassau County.
