Bob Menendez sentenced over bribery charges, wife found guilty of aiding
Former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez was convicted in July 2024. On January 29, 2025, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison over a bribery scheme involving gold. Prosecutors initially sought a 15-year sentence. However, his legal team argued for leniency, citing his age and public service history.
At his sentencing hearing, the judge said, “You were successful, powerful. You stood at the apex of our political system. I don't know what led you to commit these crimes.”

Menendez was the Democratic senator from New Jersey in the Senate for more than 18 years. He also chaired Senate Foreign Relations Committee. However, his legacy was ruined when he was accused of taking bribes, including gold bars, in exchange for favors for Egypt and New Jersey business moguls.
In July 2024, the Democrat was found guilty of all 16 felony counts he faced, including fraud and bribery. In addition, he became the first U.S. senator to be found guilty of acting as a foreign agent. The following month, he resigned from the Senate.
Prosecutors initially sought a 15-year sentence. The Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office said he guided military aid to Egypt, provided assistance to Qatar, and intervened in local prosecutions of businessmen he was acquainted with in exchange for bribes in the form of gold, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz.
In court, prosecutor Paul Monteleoni said, “There are not many offenses involving an abuse of power on the scale of Menendez's.” Meanwhile, the former senator said that he was “chastened” by the verdict.
“Other than family, I have lost everything I have cared about,” Menendez said in court. “For someone who spent his entire life in public service, every day I’m awake is a punishment,” he added.

His wife, Nadine Menendez, was also set to be tried with him on corruption charges. However, it was postponed at her lawyers' request because she needed treatment for breast cancer.
In April 2025, she was found guilty on all 15 counts, including bribery and obstruction of justice, and for aiding her husband in the bribery scheme. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York described the pair as “partners in crime.”
“Today's verdict sends a clear message that the power of government officials may not be put up for sale,” the office said in a statement. In court, prosecutor Monteleoni said, “She was keeping him in the loop every step of the way.”
