An illegal immigrant has been arrested in Florida for allegedly killing a woman by smashing her head with a mallet multiple times. The incident took place in Florida on the morning of April 3, 2025, when the 51-year-old victim, later identified as Yasmin, walked into the parking lot outside a Chevron gas station.

Rolbert Jaochin, 40, a Haitian native, was allegedly hitting her car windows with a hammer when Yasmin saw him and went outside to stop him. According to police, a witness saw Jaochin hitting Yasmin in the head with a mallet. Jaochin allegedly did not stop even after the victim fell on the ground and continued to strike her.

Man arrested in Florida for allegedly killing a woman by smashing her head with a mallet multiple times.

When first responders reached the scene, they found Yasmin dead in a pool of blood. Meanwhile, Jaochin had already fled the scene. Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) then launched a manhunt and sought assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to track Jaochin down.

He was eventually located on Mango Street and was arrested. Speaking about the search operation, Fort Myers Police Chief Jason Fields said, “We were not going home until we found him. We had, I think, a cop on every single block in the last confirmed area that we saw him, and we used every resource, like I said, from our aviation support, K-9 support, to boots on the ground.”

The motive behind the crime is still unclear, but Yasmin was reportedly innocent and defenseless when Jaochin attacked her. She was originally from Bangladesh and worked as a store clerk inside the gas station where the crime took place. She is survived by her two teenage daughters.

The Bangladeshi community in Fort Myers is now mourning her death. “I don't know why some people are being crazy. You know, we have no idea. I cannot explain, you know, that this same thing happened everywhere in this world. It's pretty bad right now,” local resident M.D. Islam said in a statement to Gulf Coast News.

Jaochin has been charged with homicide, criminal mischief, and damage to property over $1,000. He is currently in jail without bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 8. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Jaochin entered the U.S. illegally in 2022.

Though a federal judge issued a removal order against him, the DHS said the Biden administration allowed him to stay in the country by granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The TPS expired in 2024, but Jaochin continued to reside in the U.S.

The DHS has also said that Joachin will be deported from the U.S. regardless of his case’s outcome. In an official statement, DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis placed the blame for the tragedy on the Biden administration.

Bis said, “This heinous murderer was RELEASED into the country by the Biden administration. Not only did the Biden administration release him into the country, but they then gave him Temporary Protected Status. Their reckless immigration policies cost this woman her life.”
