The suspect was a linebacker with the University of Houston for three seasons but was dismissed at the end of 2020 for violating team rules.

Kirven had limited playing time for the Cougars compiling 38 tackles over three years.

Authorities charged Kirven with capital murder but have not released a possible motive for the shootings. He is currently being held in a Texas jail.

With the capital murder charge, Kirven could face the death penalty if convicted.
