Illinois man accused of fatally stabbing man believed to be his boyfriend around 50 times

An Illinois suspect allegedly admitted to stabbing a man believed to be his lover dozens of times after the two got into a fight, authorities said.

On March 2, Jesus I. Vargas, 29, was ordered held in lieu of $3 million bail on charges including murder/intent to kill, and manufacturing/delivery of cocaine, online records show.

Around 3 p.m. on Feb. 28, the Round Lake Beach Police Department responded to a home for a report of a stabbing.

At the scene, officers found Vargas with multiple lacerations and Brian Mahdee, 37, dead in the garage.

According to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokeswoman Heather Cognac, a witness told police Mahdee was unarmed when Vargas attacked him with a knife.

The Chicago Tribune reported Mahdee suffered around 50 stab wounds, and Vargas, the witness told police, then used the knife to cut himself.

Vargas was treated for his non-life-threatening injuries at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and then released into police custody for questioning.

He allegedly admitted to investigators he stabbed the victim after they got into a verbal dispute, Cognac said.
