Josh Duggar accuses parents of maintaining a fake public image
Josh Duggar, a former reality TV personality, is currently in prison after being convicted in 2021 on charges of receiving and possessing child s**ual abuse material. He was sentenced in May 2022 to more than 12 years in federal prison, and the case came after investigations traced illegal downloads to a workplace computer in 2019.
According to Page Six, in recent prison communications reported by media outlets, Josh Duggar accused his parents, Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar, of prioritising their public image. He said the family worked to “save and show public images” instead of addressing internal problems.
The earliest abuse case surrounding the Duggar family dates back to 2002 and 2003. Josh Duggar, then a minor, admitted to molesting several underage girls, including his sisters. The incidents were not reported to law enforcement at the time and were handled within the family and church.

In 2006, authorities were alerted through a child abuse hotline tip. Police reviewed the situation, but no charges were filed due to legal limits at the time. The matter became public in 2015 when police reports were released. The exposure led to the cancellation of “19 Kids and Counting” by TLC and widespread public backlash. Data from the Ashley Madison website showed Josh Duggar had paid for accounts tied to extramarital affairs.
A separate federal investigation began in 2019, unrelated to the earlier allegations. This led to Josh Duggar’s arrest in April 2021 by the U.S. Marshals.
Josh Duggar's prison sentence, for child abuse, has been extended
In December 2021, a jury found him guilty on all counts and sentenced for more than 12 years. His appeals have since failed, keeping his conviction in place.
Later in May 2023, the documentary “Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” revisited the family’s history. It highlighted claims of strict control and a culture discouraging outside reporting of abuse.
Family members have also spoken about the emotional impact. Sister Jinger Duggar described the situation as a heavy season that reopened old wounds. Recent reports have also pointed to new allegations involving extended members of the Duggar family, renewing scrutiny around the family.
Josh Duggar continues to claim innocence. He has argued that someone else was responsible for the illegal material found on his computer.
Josh Duggar, who has 18 siblings, was once popular for starring with his family on the TLC reality TV show. However, the revelations of abuse surrounding the family are a clear example of how abuse can remain hidden for years. At present, Josh Duggar is in prison at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Seagoville in Texas.
