In April 2025, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner’s estranged wife, Jillian Lauren, got into a standoff with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and opened fire at officers. The officers returned fire, and Lauren suffered non-threatening injuries. The 52-year-old author was charged with attempted murder and ordered to attend a mental health diversion program.
LAPD Report Says Officers Did Not Adhere to Policy
Jillian Lauren got into a standoff with the Los Angeles Police Department and opened fire at officers.
Now, almost a year later, the LAPD has determined that its own officers did not follow the standard procedure during the shooting incident. The department reviewed an internal report on March 24 and concluded that three officers acted improperly and did not adhere to policy.
The officers’ future now lies in the hands of LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, who will decide whether any action is needed against the three. Notably, Lauren got involved in the mess when the LAPD was investigating a hit-and-run case near the Eagle Rock neighborhood where Lauren and Shriner lived.
As the police joined the California Highway Patrol to chase the suspects, one of the suspects entered Lauren and Shriner’s neighborhood. The LAPD officers then barricaded Lauren’s home. Amid the standoff, she came out of the house with a 9-millimeter handgun and pointed it at the officers.
The officers asked her to drop the weapon, but she refused and opened fire. The police returned fire, and Lauren was left injured. She was treated at a hospital and later taken into custody. She was initially accused of attempted murder, but the charge was later reduced to assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. In September 2025, a judge ruled that she could avoid prison time by joining a mental health diversion program.
Lauren Said She is Suffering from PTSD
In December 2025, Lauren revealed that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the incident. “I’m a victim of s– trafficking and domestic violence. … When the headlines said ‘Mental Health Diversion,’ what I really thought was, ‘OK, good. People are so scared to talk about this,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“I’m in a position where I can speak to it. I had to go back and work on trauma from a long time ago in order to try and understand myself now, my actions,” Lauren added. The same month, she filed for divorce from Shriner. The couple cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their separation.
The couple had gotten married in 2005, four years after Shriner had joined the rock band Weezer. The band is known for hit songs like The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, Island in the Sun, Undone – The Sweater Song, Buddy Holly, and The World Has Turned and Left Me Here.
Apart from her marriage to Shriner, Lauren also made headlines for being a successful author. Her 2010 memoir, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, and her 2015 memoir, Everything You Ever Wanted, made her a New York Times bestselling author. Her 2023 true crime book Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer earned her further accolades.
