When officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to the scene, they found Kaitlyn Renee Higgins, 28, sitting on her front porch, which had blood on the steps, WAVE 3 News reported, citing charging documents.

Officers opened the trunk of the mother’s car and discovered Kyon Higgins Jr.’s body.

According to the arrest report, before she put her boy in the trunk, Higgin’s allegedly “admitted to attempting to cut the victim’s tongue out of his mouth” and shooting him.

A neighbor, Tayler Alexandra, told WAVE she heard a gunshot while she was on the phone with a friend.

“Oh my God, it felt very close to home,” she said. “I felt like I wish I could’ve saved the child. I know I heard those shots. Is there something I could’ve done?”

Miah Lancaster babysat the victim and his sibling, a toddler.

“This should’ve never happened,” she said of the murder. “[He] was so smart. He was a beautiful kid and literally just stayed in his room and played games. I’ve never had an issue with [him] ever. He was a sweet, loving child. He was such a good boy.”

Lancaster said the victim’s mother had “plenty of people” she could have turned to for help if she was struggling.

“This is so unfair,” she said. “We would’ve cared for him. We would’ve cared for him. One call is all it would’ve taken.”

Higgins faces charges of murder stemming from domestic violence and tampering with evidence. She is being held on a $500,000 bond at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
