A man in Kentucky has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife at her birthday party, according to authorities.

Around 9:30 p.m. on June 26, police were called regarding a domestic dispute in Rineyville in which one person was armed with a handgun, according to WAVE.

Once at the scene, deputies found Ashley Henning with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. She died before receiving any treatment, officials said.

Lt. Col. David Lee of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office said Ashley and her husband, 33-year-old Jordan Mykol Henning, were throwing a birthday party for Ashley and people at the party were drinking, according to The News-Enterprise.

Jordan and Ashley started fighting and neighbors tried to calm the couple down, but they were unsuccessful, Lee said.

The couple’s fighting started to escalate, so people began to leave, taking the couple’s children with them, officials said.

As the neighbors were leaving, they heard gunshots and then saw Jordan leaving the house in a “hurried manner” before driving away, WAVE reported.

The neighbors went back into the house and found Ashley laying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. They then called the police, authorities said.

Jordan was arrested shortly after he left the residence and the arrest report says he made “numerous utterances apologizing for hurting his wife” after he was taken into custody, according to WAVE.

Officials with Fort Knox confirmed with WAVE that Jordan is a staff sergeant stationed at the post and is assigned to the First Army Division East. Ashley was a soldier with the U.S. Army Human Resources Command and was also stationed at Fort Knox.

Jordan was charged with one count of murder-domestic violence, which is punishable by 20 to 50 years or life in prison, if convicted.

He was booked into the Hardin County Detention Center and is being held on a $1 million cash bond, officials said. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 30.
