The Williamsburg Police Department got a warrant to search the apartment that Meadows and Lay shared, cops said.

That search took place on Feb.1 and investigators said they found human remains in an outdoor trash can, wrapped in black plastic and duct tape.

The trash can was found behind a closet door, police said.

An autopsy was completed on the human remains, which determined the body found belonged to Lay and the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head.

Once the human remains were found, Meadows was arrested and he has now been charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence, authorities said.

Police have not revealed a motive in the case.
