The murder of Utah teen Laura Ann Aime was finally removed from the list of cold cases almost 50 years later. A recent report by ABC7 New York revealed that new DNA testing conducted on a sample preserved for many years finally linked the crime to notorious serial killer Ted Bundy.

The 17-year-old had disappeared on Halloween night in 1974 after leaving a party alone. She had reportedly visited a convenience store. A month later, her mutilated body was discovered along a highway.

Serial killer Ted Bundy accused for murdering Utah teen 50 years back

While the culprit could not be caught immediately, for years investigators were sure that it was the work of Ted Bundy. It became clearer after he verbally acknowledged the murder, right before his execution in 1989.

However, the case remained open officially despite strong evidence suggesting Bundy’s culpability for the crime. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office firmly believed that there could be irrefutable proof that forensic science could provide later.

Ted Bundy was living in Salt Lake City during the time that the murder took place. He allegedly studied law at the University of Utah while carrying out a spree of killings.

Laura Ann Aime Cold Case

O April 1, a new press conference was held by the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Mike Reynolds acknowledged that keeping the case open all these years only increased the pain of the victim’s family as they await closure.

Forensic investigators assigned to the case had used advanced technology in 2023. This helped to extract a male DNA profile from small and extremely degraded samples. These were originally related to the crime scene 50 years earlier, thereby cementing Bundy’s direct involvement in murdering Ann Aime.

According to a Washington Times report, now that the DNA sample has been confirmed to belong to the serial killer, it could be shared with other law enforcement departments that had suspected Bundy from the outset. With Laura’s unresolved case finally getting closure, it is anticipated that several other cold cases will see similar resolutions.

Laura’s sister, Michelle Impala, also attended the recent news conference. On behalf of her family, she thanked investigators for keeping the case open so that a closure could ultimately be reached. She extended gratitude to everyone who ensured that her sister was not forgotten and for giving their family answers.

Ted Bundy was accused of kidnapping and murdering several young women between 1974 and 1978. Bundy followed a similar modus operandi to commit his crime. He usually led his victims to believe he was in danger or duped them into believing that he was in a position of power.

Once they fell prey to his trap, Ted would then lure these women into his vehicle. It was then that he would bludgeon them. In some instances, he would even handcuff his victims before driving them off to a remote or undisclosed location. Finally, he would se**** abuse and murder them.
