Los Angeles police are warning that violent street takeovers are rising fast and could worsen in the coming summer months. Officers say these illegal gatherings are no longer just reckless stunts and are rapidly turning into dangerous crime scenes.

So far in 2026, police have broken up more than 90 takeovers. They made at least 79 arrests, as per the New York Post. Officers also impounded 114 cars, recovered four stolen vehicles, and seized four guns. Just this past weekend, at least five people were shot during these events.

Sgt. Jesse Garcia, who leads the police Street Racing Task Force, said in a statement that “it’s heating up now.” He warned that warmer weather and school breaks will likely bring even larger crowds.

Garcia described a grim picture. “There’s robberies, r**es, shootings, murders, stabbing,” he said. “It’s only increased and gotten more violent, more boisterous, and just more brazen,” he added.

On the morning of April 12, four people were shot at a large takeover in Rosemead. Deputies arrived at the scene at Del Mar and Gravey Avenue after reports came in. They arrived too late to stop the gunfire. Two of the victims were teenagers.

Just a day later, another shooting broke out at a tarkeover in the Florence-Firestone area. Deputies again arrived after the violence. One injured participant was taken to a hospital, although his condition remains unclear.

Police claim that many of those involved are just not thrill-seekers. Some also have ties to gangs or organised car clubs. These groups often deal in car theft, drugs, and weapons.

“It’s a lot of car theft rings, narcotics, human trafficking and gun running,” Garcia said. “Some of the clubs have a hierarchy identical to motorcycle gangs, with dues paying members different chapters in different states.”

Many groups also travel to Los Angeles from across California and beyond. And some follow routes along Interstate 10, stretching as far as New Orleans. Each weekend, large crowds gather for these events.

Downtown areas have seen a sharp rise in activity. Last month, a takeover crowd stormed into a luxury apartment complex near a huge convention centre. City leaders have since increased patrolling in the area.

Regarding the rising conditions, Police tactics have also changed. Officers now use unmarked cars and hidden lights to catch crowds off guard. Additionally, helicopters help in tracking suspects who try to flee.

Authorities are also tracking organisers, for example, one such case involves 22-year-old Erick Romero Quintana. Prosecutors say he used social media to plan takeovers. He now faces 16 charges linked to reckless driving, and if arrested, he could spend up to 13 years in jail.
