A former women’s college basketball player with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is accused of murdering her boyfriend at the home they shared and then fleeing, officials said.
According to police in Lafayette, Louisiana, officers responded to a home for a wellbeing check on a 43-year-old man and found him dead from a gunshot wound, The Advocate reported.
Authorities identified Destiny McAfee, the victim’s 22-year-old girlfriend, as a suspect in the case and believe she killed him during a domestic altercation in the early morning on May 28, Lafayette Police Sgt. Matthew Benoit said.
McAfee took her boyfriend’s vehicle and fled to her hometown, Longview, Texas, where she later turned herself in later that day to local police and she was arrested on a fugitive warrant out of Lafayette, according to Benoit.
McAfee is expected to be extradited to Louisiana, where she faces charges of second-degree murder and unauthorized use of an auto.
