According to authorities, Montrell Thornton, 33, grabbed a machete and hit 31-year-old Demetrius Robinson in his back while outside Thornton’s residence in Indiana.

Police said Thornton is the boyfriend of Robinson’s ex-wife. An argument took place in the driveway, which led to a fight between Thornton and Robinson, with Robinson’s ex-wife and child joining in, authorities said.

When police arrived, Robinson was bleeding profusely from his neck and could have died without first aid measures from police, the Chesterton Tribune reported.

Robinson was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Thornton was arrested and booked into the Porter County Jail on two felony charges of aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, officials said. Bond was set at $10,000.

His next court appearances are scheduled for Feb. 21 and March 21.
