Driver Accuses Ex-Officer of Fleeing Crash Scene Before Allegedly Attacking Him at Police Department

Man Takes Legal Action Against Ex-Officer Over Alleged Collision and Investigation Failure
JaJuan Wyckoff recently filed a lawsuit against former Brooklyn police sergeant Paul Stein after he allegedly "brutally attacked" him and his fellow officers "intimidated and threatened" him after Stein allegedly hit his car.
The incident unfolded on April 30, 2025, when Wyckoff was driving in Cuyahoga County in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, when his vehicle was struck by another motor vehicle being operated by Stein.
Ex-Officer Accused of Speeding at "Dangerous Speed"
A man is suing a former police officer over an alleged collision
According to a lawsuit filed on April 29, 2026, Stein was "driving unlawfully as he was driving at a dangerous speed, performed an illegal lane change, was driving recklessly, was driving under the influence of alcohol, and illegally cut off the motor vehicle being operated by Plaintiff JaJuan Wyckoff," during the time of the collision.
The lawsuit alleged that Stein later fled the scene of the accident in violation and "continued to illegally drive recklessly while driving at illegal high speeds on the public highway and then upon the public roadways," and later "sought refuge and harbor on the grounds of Defendant City Brooklyn's police department building."
Wyckoff, who captured the whole incident on his phone, followed Stein and confronted him in the parking lot of Defendant City of Brooklyn’s police department. However, he "continued to flee the scene of the accident and attempted to conceal himself inside the building."
Surveillance video showed Stein kicking and punching Wyckoff to prevent him from entering the building, and later "hid inside the building of Defendant City of Brooklyn’s police department, the report added.

Stein was neither questioned on camera, as any other suspect of a crime would have been, nor was he tested to determine if he was intoxicated after the victim informed officers he smelled of alcohol.
The report alleged that the police officers the victim came to for help and protection behaved "illegally, unlawfully and outrageously."
Wyckoff was "subjected to one final insult and illegal act of intimidation when Defendant Brooklyn Chief of Police Scott Mielke verbally warned and threatened Plaintiff JaJuan Wyckoff that he would have pulled a gun on him for what he did," the lawsuit continued.
"Stein was hidden inside the building," said Keith Hansbrough Wyckoff's attorney, according to News 5 Cleveland WEWS, adding, "They turned off their cameras. They didn’t drug test him. They didn’t alcohol test him. They were helping Stein flee the scene of an accident."
"This was an incident where there was police brutality captured on camera — with the actions of the police officer, including the chief of police, acting to cover those up and facilitate the crime," Hansbrough added.
A former police officer pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from a 2025 incident
Stein is also facing misdemeanor assault charges connected to a September 2025 incident when he allegedly repeatedly punched a woman in the head after she spat on him. He was subsequently fired from his position and pleaded no contest to the charge on Monday, May 11.
